Overwhelmed.

I admit, sometimes I hate writing.

My twitter update said it all. If we’re all being honest, we writers all hate writing once in a while. Writing is something I love, but sometimes I just don’t want to do it. I’m plagued with deadlines, plus my last year of school, and work. Adding a blog to the mix hasn’t done me much good in that either. I hear of some people who say God is just telling them to slow down.

I wish that was the case for me.

Instead, God has been throwing awesome writing opportunities at me. At first, I loved the work and loved the way God has been supplying me. But lately I’ve felt, well, overwhelmed.

The next morning I received an email:

Sorry you’re overwhelmed… You truly have a gift, Sarah. God has kissed you with this gift of writing and to make people feel something. God has not given you a spirit of fear as the verse says. As He told Joshua, “Be STRONG and COURAGEOUS” [Joshua 1:9]. He told Joshua that multiple times. God appointed Joshua to take over for Moses (after Moses died) and lead the Israelites into the Promise Land. God told him to “be strong and courageous for I will never leave or forsake you”….loosely translated by your memory-loosing mother. If not already, get into a habit of praying when you get stuck. I’ve done that before and it is amazing what will “pop” into your head! I’m still working on making that a habit myself.

Love you and He has big, big plans for you!!!
Mom

Thank you, Mom! I love you, too!

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NIV

And one of my favorite verses:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT

  1. What a wise mom you have, Sarah! I adore that word picture of God kissing you with the gift of writing. It reminds me that the gifts God has given each of us are very personal and intimate.

Sometimes we forget as writers that there lies a little word between the excitement over a new opportunity and the realization of that dream. It's called w-o-r-k. Unfortunately, sometimes when were in the trenches of the work that writing requires it's easy to lose site of the big picture and how grand it will be when the work is completed. We all end up there from time to time. Sometimes a writer simply gets tired or weary or afraid.

But you are a fabulous writer, and apparently have a very supportive, encouraging mom, so I'm sure you will get through all of this.

Thanks for sharing so honestly and transparently. It's encouraging to those of us who have been there and will likely be there again.

    Thanks for the link too!

  3. So... this is probably a bad post to mention this since you're feeling overwhelmed. But I don't see your e-mail address on here, and I have a question for you. Can you contact me via the "Newsletter" button on my site? Thanks!

  4. Sarah:

We ALL get overwhelmed. In fact, I spent some time crying out to God from that place this morning. Your mom is right--prayer helps a lot. When I get overwhelmed I like to get down on my face and pray--it reminds me God is big and I am small. He can carry my burdens for me--and to Him, they don't even seem big at all.

You are gifted. You are called. Stand strong. Fight on. And, if you get a chance, listen to Cheri Keaggy's "You Are The Reason I Stand Tall". It's my new favorite song for times when I feel overwhelmed or defeated.

    Love you friend!
